Keynote speaker for 2018: Alberto “Beto” Vasquez
At age 13 Beto Vasquez was asked to leave his home and found himself on the streets where he had to hustle to survive and sometimes barter for a place to stay while selling drugs. After spending time in Juvenile Hall and several years in state prison he found his passion while working in a fire camp where he earned a state certification in water treatment and became interested in biology. When he was released from prison Beto enrolled at San Diego City College and went on to earn both a bachelor ’s and master ’s degree in biology from UC San Diego. Beto is currently employed by UC San Diego where he leads efforts to increase diversity in STEM and if that ’s not enough, this father of four is a doctoral candidate in Education at San Diego State University and plans to pursue a career as a professor and a community college administrator .
